Carsium

From Ulmetum, on the same road, you return to the national road and after around 22 km, at the crossroads from Hanul Morilor you can turn the left on the asphalted road which leads to Topalu (Capidava), or you can continue on the road further, to Harsova. The searches and the discoveries made in the last years proved that Harsova and its surroundings represent one of the richest archaeological centres of Dobrogea. There the archaeologists found the ruins of a Roman fortification, created by the Emperor Traian in 103 AD, and of a Byzantine fortress built in the 10th – 11th c. AD.

The Byzantine stronghold, albeit well preserved, was never too much explored. Some diggings and especially inscriptions complete the architectural image of the site.

The underneath stronghold, located in a block out of a cliff, is flanked by two huge columns made of calcareous stone. There is a stone curtain of entrenchment between these two strong points, the face of the wall being made of small cubic blocks of stone.
